Supporting Growth Through Community Planning

District 8 was the only Council district to grow in population over the past 10 years, and we grew by nearly 10%. The reason for this incredible population growth is our desirable residential neighborhoods, thriving business districts, and proximity to some of the City’s most important institutions. In addition to population growth we have seen over $2 billion in direct investment with another $1 billion on the table for the next few years. However, with this phenomenal growth come pressures on our residential neighborhoods.

To ensure that we balance growth and neighborhood quality we must:

  • Develop strong community plans and forge relationships of trust between developers and neighborhood organizations
  • Work collaboratively to create master plans for our large institutions that allow them to grow while protecting the strong, vibrant residential neighborhoods that surround them
  • Develop clear and regular lines of communication between institutions, businesses, residents, and City government
  • Focus on triple-bottom-line development strategies that enhance people, profits, and the environment

We have built one of the best communities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania over the past decade and we must protect those investments and set the stage for even greater things to come.
